Music Sharing

I thought it might be a good time to remind people that you should only share music in channel of which you own the copyright/rights of distribution. Illegal sharing of music should not be conducted.

There have been a few high-profile cases recently of a crackdown in this activity and if you are sharing illegally you may well be playing with a ticking time-bomb.

Don't say we didn't warn you!

Channel Mode +R (Reg'd nicknames only)

Hi everyone, hope you all had a great holiday period and I'm sure the whole team at wavplayers wishes everyone a great new year 2008.

You might have noticed the channel is using mode +R at the moment. This is activated on a temporary basis to help combat spammers. There are a couple of spam bots doing the rounds, where they send a user to a website trying to encourage them to download a file, usually an .exe file, to install themselves on the users machine. Infected people probably wont even know it's running there, but it does serve as an annoyance to us regular IRC users.

[edit - mode R is off at the moment but please familiarise yourselves with this for your own benefit]

If you can't get in the channel...

If you have a registered nickname : identify to nickserv using

/ns identify {password}

where {password} is the password you used when registering your nick. If you have forgotten it type

/ns sendpass {yournick}

where {yournick} is the nickname of which you want the password. (I hope you used a real email address when registering!)

If you DO NOT have a registered nickname : type

/ns register {password} {email address}

where {password} is a password of your choosing and {email address} is your real email address.

Following either of those steps you should then be able to join our channel using

/join #ircwavplayers

Hope this helps anyone not in channel.

Christmas Nicks

It's that time of year again. If you want to use a different nick for the season please do one of the following. For the explanation the nick you will use i'll refer to as "xmasnick" and your regular nick i'll refer to as "yournick"

Either...

• type /ns info xmasnick


• if it's not taken type /nick xmasnick


• if it IS taken try another


• type /ns group yournick password


• nickserv should then reply to you with a confirmation of now being in teh group of "yournick"

...OR...

• type /ns info xmasnick


• if it's not taken type /nick xmasnick


• if it IS taken try another


• type /ns register password your@email.address


• see a SOp or Founder for adding to the access list(chanserv auto opping/halfopping you)

SpR 8.7 RC4 Link

Some of you may have noticed there are a few copies of SpR 8.7 RC4 about. This IS a proper copy as seen here(scroll down to 31-Dec-2003). I've hunted down a copy and hosted it at my site with a handy download linky from over there ---->

I can't personally speak for this script(or any SpR script actually) so use at your own risk.

Triviabot...

...will return to channel next week with one change.

There is now a limit set on how many questions you can answer in one day(calendar day not one 24 hour period.) At the moment it's set to 200 questions per day, however this is subject to change once we see how it's running.

This change has been implemented in response to some concerns that some players were hogging the quiz, thus not everyone could get a fair chance.

Once you reach your quota, you get a message telling you well done, you will then be unable to answer anymore questions until the bot resets, at midnight, that's the bot's midnight. (I think currently GMT-5[eastern time??])

/ctcp the bot to find out what time it's at when it comes back. (/ctcp nick TIME).

Hopefully this change will suit everyone, if you have a complaint though, feel free to get in touch with Oscartg, PeggySue, Chopper or myself and we'll deal with it.

I can't believe you are gone. This hellish disease seems to be taking us all one by one. Like with Rare I will miss you terribly mate. I only wish I actually HAD gotten down for that pint. I hate it when I go in the channel and there is a new topic like 'yours' .

I also wish I were more articulate so that what I want to say might do you justice, but I'm afraid that when I put things into words this wont be the case. I can only try.

You were one of the rocks of our channel. If ever anyone needed help or a laugh you were there. I remember asking for your accountancy skills on a few occasions which were given with a smile and free.(I wont tell anyone;o)) At one time we were the only Brits on wavplayers and that was cool. We would be online while the channel slept... not to mention spelling things correctly! lol

I don't like throwing lols into posts like this but what the hell, you were a fun guy and I'm sure you would appreciate it. I will remember you fondly mikee,

Reclaim your bank charges.

I've just reclaimed my last 5 years bank charges with the help of the people at http://www.penaltycharges.co.uk and all for free. This is well worth a look if you are in the UK and have had any charges in the last 6 years for things like, unauthorised overdraft and unpaid items charges.

Channel Bot Ideas

I'm in the process of making a bot/botnet for the channel, if anyone has any ideas what they would like to see in the bot, what options it should perform. Please leave a comment below.

So far I am thinking

• opping for when services are down and other channel controls for certain ops(kick, silence ban etc)
• the !quote thing so that I can be offline and the functionality will still be there.
• perhaps a searchbot (a searchbot is used on some big serving channels in undernet mostly, it downloads everyones list and compiles search results into one text file on a @search *stuff*)
• games(not trivia since trivbotty is already there, but something else, again ideas appreciated, perhaps a bartender with virtual money in channel given to those who contribute)
• help bot, type help in the bot's private message window and some common answers are given, akin perhaps to our old popups from DALnet.
• any other ideas.

here is a preview of the kind of things I have started with...

each user would have their own level of access to the commands based on the SOps say-so.
I am thinking that each sop would hold the script in a seperate running mIRC, so that if someones connection drops, their script kicks in and immediately replaces the lost connection, maintaining continuity. Obviously this will not be implemented for a long time yet, as I need to get the coding done, but it's somethign I think would benefit the userability of the channel.

I also have a script available at my scripts website(shameless plug) which would be of use to anyone bothered by channel play messages, because it stops most of them from showing. It's very handy to catch what the trivbot is saying. Look for hidespam.mrc.

Homepage

Don't forget our homepage is still operational at http://ircwavplayers.bravehost.com where you can see our mugshots and little bios. If you want your picture added on a page of your own at the homepage, leave a comment here and billythekid will get back to you.

There's also the added interactivity with IRC and the Homepage with the use of the !wpstats and !quote commands.

Typing !wpstats in channel will make the stats bot(on billythekids computer) update the stats page with some interesting and sometimes funny statistics on channel use.

Typing !quote some funny text will make the quote bot(also on billy's PC) update the quotes page.

Obviously since these are located on billy's PC if he isn't in channel they wont work, but how often is that the case?
